Review UMIDIGI Z Pro

Within the MWC-2017, UMIDIGI presented a smartphone with two cameras - Z Pro. It's interesting that the module is color-coded, and the other one is black-and-white, as we saw earlier in Huawei models. This is done to achieve a broader dynamic range and simply obtaining a BW photo without post-processing.

In addition, the device can boast of a new chip MediaTek X27 with 10 cores and three clusters. It is also worth noting that battery in this phone has capacity of 3780mAh. The remaining parameters are relatively typical for a product valued at $230.

Design

The device UMIDIGI Z Pro is made in the classical form factor. The design is generally calm and nothing new - a typical Chinese smartphone. Materials - aluminum and Dragontrail glass. The lateral metal frames somewhat abruptly pass to the rear and front panels. 

On top of the front panel, there is an indicator of missing events, a camera, sensors and a receiver. 

Under the screen - the “Home” touch button, it also acts as a fingerprint sensor. Touch buttons can be removed from the screen and swapped.

3.5 mm audio jack is on top.

At the bottom, there are a microphone, a USB Type-C (USB 2.0) port and a speaker.

On the left, you will find a metal hybrid SIM card tray (SIM + SIM or SIM + SD). On the right - aluminum power button and volume rocker. 

On the back side: dual camera, a flashlight (cold and warm glow), an additional microphone. There are also noticeable gray stripes of antenna. By the way, the smartphone UMIDIGI Z Pro is sold only in black color (as for me, so it's more likely dark gray).

Display

The device is equipped with 5.5 inches display. The physical size is 68x121 mm, right and left bezels are about 4.5 mm. The resolution of UMIDIGI is FullHD, that is, 1920x1080 pixels. The density is 400 pixels per inch. The matrix is made using IGZO technology without an air gap.

The brightness is adjustable either automatically or manually. If the latter option is selected, then the brightness can be set higher. Auto brightness works fine. 

The display was estimated 7,16 points.

Hardware

One of the latest MediaTek-X27 (MT6797X) chips was installed in UMIDIGI Z Pro: it consists of three clusters (ARM-A72 2.6 GHz, 2xARM-A53 2 GHz and 1.6 GHz), total 10 cores, 20 nm processing technology. Graphics - ARM Mali-T880 with support for OpenGL ES 3.1. It is the X27 capable of working with two cameras, both with color-coded and black and white.  

In this model, you will find 4 GB RAM LPDDR3. The internal storage eMMC 5.1 is not much by modern standards - 32 GB (about 23 GB available). The reading speed is 140 MB / s, the writing speed is 80 MB / s. Average parameters.

Performance

Our system estimated the performance 9,85 points.  It can launch games, but you shoud not expect stable 30-60 frames. Even under non-weak load, the body of the devices is heated within a reasonable range.

Multimedia

The manufacturer claims that Z Pro uses an “independent Hi-Fi system” to achieve great music experience. Probably, we are talking about the high efficiency class-D audio amplifier - NXP-TFA9890. In our opinion, the music from smartphone in headphones sounds good. The quality is not bad. The speaker volume is average.

Camera

Camera - the main feature of this device. Here the manufacturers use two rear camera modules from Sony - IMX258 (the same one is used in Meizu M3e, Xiaomi Mi4C, Mi5s Plus, ZTE Blade V8, Samsung J7 Prime and other devices). Each module received 13 MP resolution. The shooters takes average photos.

Front camera is 13 MP SAMSUNG S5K3L8 with aperture f = 2.2. It takes perfect photos, you just will be satisfied with the quality! Video - FullHD.

The cameras received 9,59 points.

Battery

The device has a non-removable battery with capacity of 3780 mAh.

The manufacturer claims that the smartphone is able to “live” in standby mode for 13-15 days.

Our figures are slightly more modest: up to 4 hours in the game mode, up to 8 hours - video (HD, full brightness), up to 20 hours - calls. 

The device supports fast charging (5V / 7V / 9V - 1.67A and 12V - 1.25A): for 30 minutes - about 50%, for 1 hour - 80%, for 1 hour 20 minutes - 100%.

The system gave the battery a mark of 7,66 points.

OS

At the moment, Google Android version 6.0 is installed in UMIDIGI Z Pro. Manufacturers say that it is expected to be updated to 7.0.

The OS received 6,71 points. 

Conclusion

Once again we would like to repeat that at the moment the smartphone UMIDIGI Z Pro can be bought for 240 US dollars.

If you take into account the cost of the device, then we have no special complaints about it. However, if you look at it in detail, then: the average quality of photos and video, the average battery life, the average sound quality, the old version of OS, the performance is slightly above average, the usual amount of internal storage and a good IPS-screen.

If the manufacturer release the update to Android 7.0 and corrects the “defects” of software in the system, we think Z Pro will have the second chance.
